Dry needling

Do you suffer from painful, tense muscles or stubborn muscle knots in your neck, shoulders or back? With dry needling, our physiotherapists in Rotterdam treat these muscle knots (trigger points) in a targeted way, so pain and tension decrease and you move more freely again.

What is dry needling?

Dry needling targets hardened areas in muscles, also known as trigger points or muscle knots. These knots can cause pain, sometimes in a different part of the body (referred pain), and restrict your movement.

How does dry needling work?

Using a thin, sterile needle, the physiotherapist stimulates the muscle briefly and precisely. This makes the muscle relax and reduces tension. No fluid is injected, hence the name "dry" needling.

With dry needling we focus on:

  • Reducing pain and muscle tension
  • Improving your freedom of movement
  • Tackling the cause of your muscle complaints
  • Lasting recovery, combined with exercise therapy

Which complaints can dry needling help with?

Dry needling can help with muscle complaints in various parts of the body. You can come to us for, among other things:

  • Neck and shoulder complaints
  • Back pain
  • Tension headaches
  • Muscle pain and stiffness
  • Complaints in the buttocks, hips or legs
  • Sports injuries

Is dry needling suitable for me?

During the intake we discuss whether dry needling is a good choice for you. Do you take blood thinners, are you pregnant, do you have reduced immunity or are you very afraid of needles? Let us know, and we'll look together at the best treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral?
No, you can book an appointment without a GP referral.

Is dry needling covered by insurance?
Dry needling is part of a physiotherapy treatment, so it is covered like a regular treatment under your supplementary health insurance. Read more about insurance cover.

How many treatments will I need?
This varies per complaint. You often notice a difference after just a few treatments. After the intake we'll discuss what you can expect.

What is the difference with acupuncture?
With dry needling we specifically treat a trigger point in the muscle, based on a physiotherapy examination. Acupuncture is based on a different view of the body and focuses on fixed points.

Is dry needling painful?

The treatment can feel briefly sensitive. When the needle hits the trigger point, you may feel a short muscle twitch. That's normal, and actually a good sign.

After the treatment you may feel a bit bruised, similar to muscle soreness. This is a well-known, harmless side effect that usually disappears within a few days.

Results and recovery

Many patients notice after one or a few treatments that muscle tension decreases and they move more freely. Because we combine dry needling with exercise therapy and advice, you work not only on reducing your complaints, but also on preventing new muscle knots.
