Physiotherapy for Parkinson's disease

Do you notice that walking, getting up or keeping your balance is getting harder because of Parkinson's disease? With targeted physiotherapy we help you keep moving independently, safely and actively for as long as possible.

What does physiotherapy do for Parkinson's?

Parkinson's disease affects how you move. Movements can become slower and smaller, balance gets worse and the risk of falling increases. Regular, targeted exercise is an important part of treatment, and our physiotherapists help you with that.

With physiotherapy for Parkinson's we work on:

  • Walking and making larger, smoother movements
  • Balance and fall prevention
  • Getting up, sitting down and turning over in bed
  • Strength, fitness and mobility
  • Strategies for freezing while walking

Our approach

During the intake we map out what matters to you in daily life and what you are struggling with. After a physical examination we draw up a personal plan together. Treatment consists of exercise therapy, training of everyday activities and practical tips for at home. We adapt the treatment to the stage of your condition and your load capacity.

Where necessary, we consult with your GP, neurologist or other healthcare providers.

Fysico Rotterdam has a physiotherapist who is a member of ParkinsonNet, the Dutch national network of healthcare providers specialised in Parkinson's disease.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time to start physiotherapy?
As early as possible. Even in an early stage, targeted exercise helps you maintain your fitness and independence for as long as possible.

Do I need a referral?
For reimbursement from the basic health insurance, yes. You can also come to us without a referral, but reimbursement then depends on your supplementary insurance.

Can my partner or carer come along?
Yes, they are very welcome. That way we can also give tips for at home.

Reimbursement for Parkinson's

Parkinson's disease is on the Dutch list of chronic conditions for physiotherapy. From the 21st treatment onwards, treatments are covered by the basic health insurance. You pay for the first 20 treatments yourself or through your supplementary insurance. For reimbursement from the basic insurance you need a referral from your GP or specialist, and this cover counts towards your deductible (eigen risico).

The exact conditions differ per health insurer. Not sure? Feel free to contact us and we'll work it out together.

Want to stay active for as long as possible with Parkinson's? We're happy to help.
